Eating & Brain Foods
Eating brain foods sounds a bit boring but it really doesn't have to be.
Some foods are just perfect for the brain!
Whilst others clog or fog the thinking and should be avoided. These types of foods are often the ones that are bad for our hearts and bodies.
Bad foods include processed foods which contain refined sugar, white flour, trans fats, polyunsaturated fat and/or salt. Other culprits include alcohol and illicit drugs.
Foods that are good for the brain include:
- Foods high in omega 3 fatty acids such as nuts are great for your brain. Walnuts, which coincidentally are shaped like the brain, are said to be one of the best. Other sources include flax seeds; grass fed beef and lamb; cold water fish such as salmon, herring, anchovies, mackerel and tuna; and eggs.
- Foods high in anti-oxidants are generally fantastic for the brain.
Examples of foods high in anti-oxidants are blueberries, strawberries, broccoli or some exotic fruits such as dragonfruit.
- Foods high in folate and vitamin B12 have been shown to help maintain cognitive function as we age. Good sources are leafy green vegetables such as spinach and citrus fruits.
Co-incidentally, foods that are good for the brain are generally the same ones you see on the list for heart health.
Eating this way keeps both heart and brain healthy!
There are lots of fantastic foods that are brilliant for the brain.
The main thing is to avoid or reduce the things that are bad for the brain and make sure you are getting a good selection of good brain foods.
