Friends To Help Your Brain

We all need social interaction! Although, sometimes it feels better to be away from all the noise of life.

As we get older, we tend to find reasons to interact less or sometimes events occur that force us into a period of reduced social interaction such as:

  • working from home
  • retiring and leaving our biggest social environment - work
  • or becoming single again

These can be forced, sudden or even anticipated events, but the social implications can be overlooked.

The dawn of the internet age, is making it possible to avoid direct social contact.

Socializing For Your Brain

Whilst peace and solitude have their place, so does real contact and conversations with other people. Studies have shown that people with low support or social networks have tendencies towards depression.

A very scary study showed that people who were told they would end up alone in life were unable to drink a healthy drink and gave up when trying to solve hard or frustrating puzzles.

As with all studies, it had its limitations, it doesn't hurt to make some time for social interaction. It isn't hard to do:

  • Volunteer for some community work
  • Join a walking group or a club
  • Meet friends for a lunch on a regular basis

And if you are in the suddenly single set, perhaps you need to be bold and get yourself out there dating again!

Who would have thought: Dating could be good for your brain!
