Can You Drink Too Much Water?

The answer is yes, but it is usually pretty hard for the average person.

You would have to drink a lot of water and usually in a very short period of time.

When this happens the body can shut down, you may have seen this in endurance athletes.

They lose sodium through their sweating and if it is not replaced by electrolyte drinks then they can cause really bad damage to their bodies. It can be fatal if not treated quickly.

This is not usual and you would have to drink a lot more than your daily 8 x 8. It is possible to drink too much water, but quite unlikely for most people. Don't use this as a reason to not drink enough water!

Another common worry is that drinking your daily requirement of water will make you bloated.

If you are not used to it, initially you may go to the bathroom more often. Water retention or bloating is caused by other things including too much salt, but not by drinking water.

The opposite of too much water is of course too little, find out more about dehydration including some unexpected causes that could be sabotaging your good intentions.
